Frozen pipe thawing, burst pipe repair and main water line leak repair across Castle Rock
Call (970) 528-5707 NowCastle Rock sits high on the Palmer Divide, and winter cold snaps here can be sharp. Most water line calls we get in the cold months involve a pipe that froze in an exterior wall, garage, crawlspace or hose bib. The rest of the year, it's more often a leak in the buried service line between the street and the house.
When a pipe freezes, ice blocks the flow and pressure builds between the ice and the closed faucet. The split often doesn't leak until the ice melts. We thaw frozen lines with controlled heat, never an open flame, find any splits and replace the damaged pipe. Then we look at what let it freeze, whether that's missing insulation, a drafty rim joist or a spigot left with a hose attached.
We confirm the leak at the meter, trace the line and locate the break, then repair the section or replace the line if it's failing in more than one place.
Clay soils that swell and shrink with moisture can put stress on buried pipe and on the point where the line passes through the foundation wall. Flexible, properly bedded pipe and a correctly sleeved wall penetration help a repaired line stay sound.
Every excavation starts with an 811 locate request so buried utilities are marked. If the leak is on the town's side of the curb stop, we tell you so it can be reported to the water utility. For leaks inside walls and floors, see leak detection.
Shut off and drain the affected line
Locate the freeze point, split or buried leak
Install new pipe and fittings where damaged
Test under pressure and insulate or reroute exposed runs
Gentle warmth from a hair dryer or space heater is reasonable, but never use an open flame. If you can't find the frozen spot or the pipe has split, shut the water off and call us.
Leaving a hose connected traps water in the valve body, where it can freeze and split the pipe inside the wall. Disconnect hoses before the first hard freeze.
A large leak that floods the yard or basement is. A slow one can wait a short time, but it still wastes water and can wash out soil around the foundation.
